I had the canon 50mm 1.4 ltm on my leica M8 and it gave amazing results. Yes it had some vintage feel but it is very sharp and in black and white it really shines. I have the zeiss 50mm f2 now on my m262 and like it very much. Zeiss is excellent on leica system.
Hi Hugo, the Sonnar 50mm is a temperamental lens due to it's focus shift, the older versions of thisl lens were calibrated at f/2.8, the newer ones at f/2.0 – 1.5 from what I heard. I have this lens mostly glued on my M9 because of the combination CCD sensor and lens. You have basically 2 optics in one. Wide open you have the classic Sonnar design look, at f/5.6 and higher you have a very sharp modern lens,.
I love the rendering of this lens, but my favourite aperture is f/2.0 (less caffeinated bokeh). On the M8 it is more a portrait type of lens around 75mm fl.
Perhaps off topic but using the CV 50mm f/1.2 and the CV 50mm f/1.5. I have used both lenses and I love the rendering. Perhaps you should have a look at one of these if you can get a hold on it.
These lenses are asph designs and have no noticable focus shift on digital sensors.
Hi Hugo, it is well known that this lens has focus shift as you found out. Zeiss by default allows the focus shift at f1.5 but also gave the option to have the lens calibrated so that it has no focus shift at f1.5, but it has focus shift at f2.8 (my copy is like this). I prefer this option as I bought the lens to use it a f1.5.
